Dragonflies and Damselflies 27 - Golden-ringed Dragonflies

GOLDEN-RINGED DRAGONFLY Cordulegaster boltonii
(f)
- A
female Golden-ringed
Dragonfly Cordulegaster boltonii
is shown ovipositing into the River Dourbie in
the South of France. The dragonfly hovers above the water, selects her
spot and then dips the end of her abdomen momentarily into the shallow
water in order to deposit an egg from her long ovipositor. This exercise
is repeated several times and the dragonfly then moves to another location
and repeats this process. Presumably laying over a relatively wide area
will give her offspring a better chance of survival, particularly in a
river like this one which contains a very healthy fish population.
