- The photographer fortunately
noticed the Lesser
Emperor Dragonfly Anax parthenope in the second
photograph roosting before it spotted him, and it was
therefore possible to obtain a sequence of photographs before it was
disturbed. Such opportunities are rare with large hawker dragonflies and
need to be grasped whenever possible. This photograph was taken in the Camargue, South
of France. This species is being recorded with increasing frequency in the
UK. The first (cropped) image of a patrolling male was obtained in a
London park, and the final cropped photograph is of a female in flight –
the first ever record of this species for Wimbledon Common. These
dragonflies are difficult subjects to capture as their flightpaths are
completely unpredictable!
