Unusually
for a libellulid the Four-spotted Chaser Dragonfly
Libellula quadrimaculata
is not overtly sexually dimorphic and no blue pruinescence
will develop on the adult males. Older specimens darken with age. The sexes may
be separated by the shape of the anal appendages (diverging in the male and
parallel in the female), but they are not always easy to see clearly enough to
be certain (so hopefully the labelling above is correct!). There is also a
subtle difference in the shape of the abdomens. This insect has a habit of
perching on stalks protruding through the water’s surface so they can be tricky
to photograph unless they settle on nearby vegetation. They are challenging to
photograph in flight as they will rarely hover for more than a few moments.
