The
Variable Damselfly Coenagrion pulchellum may
be found at well-vegetated (usually) still-water sites, for example the fen in
Norfolk where these photographs were taken. The broken ante-humeral
stripes are only normally seen on males. Caution is required when separating
several similar species that may be prone to variation in their markings,
particularly the very widely distributed and common Azure Damselfly C. puella
(illustrated elsewhere on this web site). A knowledge of the distribution of
the rarer Coenagrion species will be helpful too. The rear
of the prothorax of this species has characteristic indentations (see 4th
photograph). The use of a well-illustrated reference book is to be advised,
particularly in the light of recent range-expansions by continental European
species.
