Sadly,
scanning old, scratched, dusty and under-exposed transparencies has proven to
be the only available option for illustrating White-faced Darter Dragonflies
Leucorrhinia dubia
for this web page as the population to which these individuals belonged at a
well-known site in Surrey became extinct in 1999. Fortunately, it has been
possible to clean the photographs up and lighten them up by using modern
software to provide an accurate representation of this elusive and difficult to
photograph species. The boggy habitat requirements for this vulnerable insect
are highly specific and such specialisation has proven to be fatally
disadvantageous as the effects of anthropogenic climate change have taken their
toll. The only remaining UK populations are now restricted to cooler northern
sites and these will be placed in significant danger if the climate becomes any
warmer than it is at the time of writing (2020).
