GOLDEN-RINGED DRAGONFLIES Cordulegaster boltonii (f)

·         This naturally lit sequence illustrates a female Golden-ringed Dragonfly Cordulegaster boltonii ovipositing in a small stream in Portugal. The photographs needed to be taken between each oviposition as the dragonfly flew up and hovered above the water and in retrospect it might have been better to have taken them using a higher ISO setting to increase the depth of field. Manual focussing was required. The long, pointed ovipositor of this handsome species is clearly visible. The disruptive colour pattern of this dragonfly makes it difficult to spot when hanging from vegetation.
