and Damselflies 65 – Western Clubtail Dragonflies

WESTERN
CLUBTAIL DRAGONFLY Gomphus pulchellum (m)
·
The
photographer almost dismissed this rather tatty looking male Western Clubtail Dragonfly Gomphus
pulchellum, found as a singleton amongst
numerous Blue-eyed Hooktail or Large Pincertail Dragonflies Onychogomphus
forcipatus, as a suitable subject for
photography as his wings were in such a sorry state, but despite this a single
photograph was taken as there seemed to be something different about his
markings, and he had a noticeably longer abdomen than O. forcipatus.
Rightly so, as this proved to be the only opportunity to photograph a member of
this species during a July visit to the Dordogne, particularly as the flight
season for these dragonflies was almost over (hence the sub-optimal condition
of the wings!). The markings on the body were clearly defined. If in doubt,
always take reference photographs!
