These
photographs of Southern Damselflies or Mercury Bluets Coenagrion mercuriale
were taken in the Dordogne, France, where this delicate insect is described as
locally common. The ‘Mercury’ mark on the second abdominal segment of males is
distinctive, as are the spear-shaped marks on the third and fourth segments.
The roughly circular pale ‘dot-dash-dot’ (‘R’ in Morse Code!) eyespots with a
pale line running between them, and the shape of the trailing edge of the
pronotum are also important characteristics to examine when attempting to
identify this species.
