_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Fishes 2 - Common Carp
COMMON CARP Cyprinus carpius
·
In order to survive to this size a Common Carp Cyprinus
carpius (an introduced fast-growing
freshwater fish and therefore in direct competition with native species) simply
needs to avoid being eaten but once it has grown too large to be swallowed by a
Grey Heron Ardea cinerea
or a Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo
a specimen like this must have a reasonable chance of living to a ripe old age
of perhaps twenty years! It must be presumed that a significant majority of its
species will not be so fortunate. This image has been computer-adjusted in
order to reduce interference from the reflections from the water’s surface and
clarify the image of this rather impressive fish.
