The Broad Centurion Soldierfly Chloromyia formosa
is a handsome (if inconspicuous) fly, often to be found on low vegetation
close to water. The flies are sexually dimorphic and the males (with compound
eyes touching on the top of their heads) are metallic green or greenish bronze
with bronze abdomens. Females are blue-green, and the halteres of both
sexes are creamy yellow. From the examination of photographs, it appears
that only the eyes of the females possess colourful patterns, but this may
only be evident from certain angles.
