- These Hornet
Giant Hoverflies Milesia crabroniformis were photographed in France and
in Tuscany (Toscana), Italy. The specific name indicates a similarity to
the European Hornet
Vespa crabro (see illustration elsewhere on
this web site). Milesia
crabroniformis is known as 'La Milésie
Faux-Frelon' in France. They are
particularly convincing hornet mimics when in flight. There is one
possible UK record. A recently discovered vernacular name has been used
here, although it seems counterintuitive, and may be a consequence of
translation, as ‘Giant Hornet Hoverfly’ would seem to be more appropriate.
These impressive flies certainly merit a common name!
