- These photographs illustrate Banded General Soldierflies
Stratiomys potamida
(one of the most handsomely marked of the British soldier-flies) in
close-up. The long, thin, aquatic larvae may sometimes be observed
wriggling at the water’s surface and they feed on decaying vegetable
matter. Freshly emerged adults often appear to seek honeydew, using their
extended mouthparts, as illustrated in several of these photographs. These
flies are quite surreptitious in their habits, settling on low, sunlit
vegetation and rarely being found in multiple. They can be difficult to
spot despite their striking wasp-like colours (exhibiting Batesian
mimicry). A slow, careful approach is required to avoid disturbing them otherwise
they will simply take off and disappear into the treetops, never to be
seen again!
