The Large Tiger Hoverfly Helophilus
trivittatus is the largest (by a small
margin, and with some overlapping) and brightest member of this genus but
separating them is not easy and good reference material is required. The
entirely yellow face visible in the second photograph is a useful
characteristic – provided, of course, that it can be seen. Unusually for
hoverflies and many other flies in general the compound eyes are separated at
the top of the head in both sexes. Numbers vary each year as this hoverfly is
migratory with a bias towards the southern counties.
