GOSSAMER HOVERFLY Baccha elongata (f)

·        The Gossamer Hoverfly Baccha elongata is a distinctive fly with a ‘wasp waist’ strongly tapered abdomen that in the case of the gravid female illustrated above was more bulbous as it was laden with eggs. The behaviour of this hoverfly is surreptitious and although common it may need to be looked for as it hovers close to the vegetation of woodland margins and often disappears under leaves.
