The
vernacular name of the Golden-haired Robberfly Choerades marginatus,
a nationally scarce insect restricted to well wooded sites in the southern
counties in the UK, refers to the golden hairs on the abdomen and the bright
yellow halteres are also quite conspicuous. The
compound eyes merit close examination too (see 4th photograph) as
they are rather beautiful. These flies will prey on smaller insects including
the presumed Psocid shown in the final two
photographs. The photographs were taken at three sites in Surrey and London.
