LATE BEAR HOVERFLY Sericomyia superbiens (m)

·         The bee-mimicking Late Bear Hoverfly Sericomyia superbiens was once known by the scientific name of Arctophila fulva, nomenclature that had independently been applied to an Arctic moss by botanists! Other members of the same genus are convincing social wasp mimics. The clouding on the wings is rather faint on the above example photographed in the South of France. This species is associated with damp habitats in the north and west of the UK and it is absent from most of the south eastern counties of England other than East Anglian fenland habitats.
