BROAD-BANDED EPISTROPHE HOVERFLY Epistrophe grossulariae (m)

·         The Broad-banded Epistrophe Epistrophe grossulariae is, on the face of it, one of many similar British hoverfly species possessing black and yellow abdominal stripes. However, the pattern is unique to this species and identification is assisted by the presence of two pale grey parallel thoracic stripes. The behaviour of this fly is also unusual as it will feed whilst hovering, often just touching a flower with its front feet. Other hoverflies will normally settle to feed. This behaviour makes this one of the easiest flies to photograph in flight.
