A late flight-season and
an elongated body characterise the Twin-spot Centurion Soldierfly
Sargus bipunctatus. The fly is metallic in appearance, the largest and most striking
member of its genus in the UK, sexually dimorphic and only the females (shown
above) possesses the eponymous twin-spot abdominal
markings. Despite previous observations an exclusive association with cow-dung
for oviposition would seem unlikely as this species may be found inhabiting
woodland margins some distance away from cattle. This suggests that other
substrates may also be used for larval development.
