The vernacular name of
Black Snipefly Chrysopilus cristatus probably doesn’t do this insect justice as the males are liberally
covered in brassy hairs, and it certainly doesn’t describe the female
accurately at all. These long-legged flies are often to be found close to water where they participate in the pollination of flowers. The swollen
abdomen of the female in the final photograph would indicate that she is gravid
(her eggs will be laid into soil). Their halteres are particularly conspicuous.
