·         These photographs of White-barred Peat Hoverflies Sericomyia lappona were taken in Norway where this large and strikingly marked fly appears to be comparatively common. In the UK, this distinctive insect is associated with boggy and wet heathland sites, mainly in the north and west, and the white abdominal stripes enable it to be separated from the only likely confusion species the (larger) Yellow-barred Peat Hoverfly S. silentis in which the abdominal bars are (perhaps unsurprisingly) yellow.
