The
Yellow-barred Peat Hoverfly Sericomyia silentis is one of the largest and most distinctive
hoverflies in the UK where its favoured habitats are bogs and wet heathlands,
predominantly those located in northern and western counties. These photographs
of this social wasp mimic were taken in Scotland, Norway, and by a gravel-pit
in southern England. The presence of yellow abdominal bands should enable
separation from the White-banded Peat Hoverfly S. lappona.
