·
The Buff-tailed Bear Hoverfly Criorhina floccosa, a
woodland inhabitant, is one of the more convincing and attractive bumblebee-mimicking
hoverflies, possessing bright orange fur on its dorsal surfaces and bearing a superficially
similar appearance to the Common Carder Bee Bombus
pascuorum. The extended face is a
characteristic of all four British Criorhina species but
the prominent tufts of whitish hairs on the sides of the abdomen are a
distinguishing feature of this species. Confusion is possible with the tawny
colour form of the Narcissus Fly Merodon
equestris but the
wing venation is noticeably different, lacking the characteristic looped veins
of M.
equestris.
