·         In the experience of the photographer, the Orange-belted Plumehorn Hoverfly Volucella inflata has proven to be the most elusive of the Volucella genus of large, social wasp and bumble bee-mimicking hoverflies, five of which may be found in the UK, but this may be related to the habitats visited rather than to the relative abundance of this species. The female shown above was showing considerable interest (along with several European Hornets Vespa crabro) in the sap-runs generated by Goat Moth Cossus cossus larvae in an infested Silver Birch Betula pendula at a heathland site in Surrey and she was seen to oviposit - see link to film below. The photographer has also seen this fly on vegetation bordering deciduous woodland rides.

·         David’s short film of the same Orange-belted Plumehorn Hoverfly in action may be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSTLv5x6c8A&list=PL4AirIEc0NoeD80AUt1cZSSNn9qCyu8XC&index=3.
