The
bumble bee mimicking Furry Dronefly Eristalis
intricarius is, by hoverfly standards, an
easily recognisable and distinctive fly. It is also unusual for an Eristalis species in having overt sexual
dimorphism as only the females possess white tips to their abdomens. The scutellum
of both sexes is yellow and the presence and density of orange hairs on the
head and thorax is variable, with some individuals of both sexes being darker
than others. The males seem to be quite territorial, sometimes hovering for
protracted periods before returning to favoured perches. Some of the in-flight
photographs have been taken using high ISO settings and shutter-speeds (but not
ultra-high) in an attempt to freeze the movement of
the wings – with varying success.
These handsome hoverflies play an active role in pollination, as will be
evident from the pollen grains dusting their bodies.
