·        The Hottentot Bee-fly Villa hottenttota is one of several similar, sexually dimorphic, European flies belonging to the genus Villa. This female was photographed in the Vendée, France. The band-pattern on the upper surface of the abdomen is a useful feature when separating them. Bee-fly larvae are principally parasitoids of solitary wasps and bees, and in the case of V. hottenttota of sphecid wasps. As may be seen from the photographs, their parents are useful pollinators.
