COMMON PIPIZA HOVERFLY Pipiza noctiluca (f)

·         Female Common Pipiza Hoverflies Pipiza noctiluca usually (but not always) possess two clearly defined orange spots on their abdomens, but these are variable, both in shape and size, and in some specimens they are absent. The orange spots on the female illustrated above are particularly bright and well-defined, clouding on the wings is most evident in the second photograph (this also varies in intensity) and the shape and colour of the pterostigmata is also clearly visible. Unless recognisable by their association with females, the predominantly black males require the consultation of entomological keys or high-quality reference photographs if they are to be identified unequivocally.
