__________________________________________________________________________________________Flies 63 – Twin-spot Boxer Hoverflies
TWIN-SPOT
BOXER HOVERFLY Platycheirus rosarum (m)
·
The
generic name of Platycheirus translates
as “flat-handed” in reference to a feature that is paradoxically (and uniquely)
not found in male Twin-spot Boxer Hoverflies P. rosarum
as there are no modifications (flattening or otherwise) to their forelegs. The
two creamy-yellow spots on the third tergite of the abdomen may be fused in
some specimens, and there may be additional pairs of smaller spots (as shown in
the photograph) on the fourth or second tergites, further undermining the
accuracy of the scientific name of this predominantly wetland species.
