·         The female Long-winged Duskyface Hoverfly Melanostoma scalare (illustrated) is characterised by having orange antennae, distinctive yellow patches resembling the heads of golf-clubs on the abdomen, and wings that extend well beyond the tip of the abdomen. Males also possess substantially orange antennae and narrow, elongated bodies, and their abdominal spots are rectangular. This is a common and widely distributed hoverfly in the UK.
