COASTAL SILVER-STILETTO FLY Acrosathe annulata (m)

·         As inferred by the vernacular name, the Coastal Silver-stiletto Fly Acrosathe annulata (Therevidae) is to be found at sandy coastal locations, although not exclusively so, as it is also to be found at some heathland sites. Their opalescent wings are rather attractive! Females are larger and much less hairy than their hirsute male counterparts. Pale halteres (invisible in the photograph) and a hairy face help to distinguish the male of this fly from similar species. The photograph was taken in Kent.
