Care
needs to be taken when separating similar species of fly, and this is the case
with the Waisted Duckfly Anasimiya
contracta, a wetland hoverfly associated with
Bulrush Typha latifolia, and illustrated here with an old, substandard,
software-adjusted scanned transparency (first photograph) taken in the Norfolk
Broads that appears (unconvincingly!) to show the contraction of the second
abdominal segment that characterises the females of this species, and with a
more recently captured lateral view taken in London of a female feeding in
which the abdomen cannot be seen from an angle that illustrates this narrowing.
However, the rarer Golf-club Duckfly A. transfuga
is extremely similar, and the possibility that the photographs may be of this
species cannot be excluded. The face of the fly in the second photograph does
not appear to extend as far as, or project at the same angle as that of the Snouted
Duckfly A. lineata.
Note that the eyes of the males of the members of this genus do not join up at
the top of the head.
