·         The Compost Hoverfly Syritta pipiens is a small, widely distributed, and common fly, and it is comparatively easy to identify as the femora of the hindlegs are noticeably swollen. These are equipped with an array of spines in both sexes that appear to have no obvious biological purpose beyond decoration. The larvae develop in damp leaf-litter and other suitably moist substrates, and the species has a long flight season. Males will guard their ‘territories’ by hovering for extended periods, as shown in the first photograph.
