The
Large Ocelot Cranefly Epiphragmus ocellare
(Limnoniidae, Limnophilinae),
a long-tailed cranefly (this description refers to the thin, extended
ovipositors of females), is so-called because of the ring-like markings on its
wings that superficially resemble the spots of Ocelots (although these are not
particularly visible in the photographs as the wings are being held at an
angle). They form part of the blackish ‘wing-picturing’, variable in its
intensity, that will perhaps enable this species to be identified more easily
than some other craneflies. It is a widespread but not particularly common species
associated with woodland habitats, and the pairs of black markings on the legs
are also useful identifiers. The publication of ‘British Craneflies’ by
Alan Stubbs, British Entomological and Natural History Society in
2021 (ISBN: 978-1-899935-09-3) has provided invaluable reference
material that will assist with the identification of craneflies belonging to
six families to species, 350 of which are included. The illustrations of
dismembered wings are particularly useful for comparison (although not such
good news for the flies!). Such benchmark publications are labours of love, and
many years of thorough and detailed research are required to produce them.
