ORANGE BIBIO FLY Bibio hortulanus (f)

·         One of two sexually dimorphic British Bibionid (St. Mark’s) flies with predominantly orange females (their heads and legs are black), the Orange Bibio Fly Bibio hortulanus is predominantly found in East Anglia where the above photograph was taken. The vernacular name only really holds true for the females. This fly may be most readily separated from the more widespread Downland Bibio Fly B. anglicus, a resident of calcareous downland habitats, by the dark outer costal margins of the wings of the females when they are seen at rest. Males are smaller, entirely black, rather hairy with bulbous eyes, and perhaps easiest to identify by their association with females.
