GREEN PARASITE FLY Gymnochaeta viridis

·         The Green Parasite Fly Gymnochaeta viridis may at first sight be mistaken for a greenbottle, but this conspicuously bristle-covered fly belongs to the large family Tachinidae (containing about 270 UK species), many of which are harder to identify than this one. Some examples may become coppery with age. There are a couple of similar species, but they are far less common. This fly is first on the wing quite early in the year, and males are often to be encountered basking on tree trunks. The larvae parasitise moth larvae.
