TWO-BANDED SPEARHORN HOVERFLY Chrysotoxum bicinctum (f)

·         The Two-banded Spearhorn Hoverfly Chrysotoxum bicinctum belongs to a genus of social wasp-mimics, although it is probably the least convincing in appearance as its markings are only superficially like those of any of the British social wasps (Vespula, Dolichovespula spp.). Having said this, the flight is very wasp-like, and the striking black and yellow pattern is highly distinctive, making this the most straightforward of the Chrysotoxum species (or indeed British flies) to identify. The flight is often low down and surreptitious, making this a difficult fly to photograph as vegetation often gets in the way!
