Grasshoppers and Crickets 15 – Short-winged Cone-heads

SHORT-WINGED CONE-HEAD Conocephalus
dorsalis (f)

SHORT-WINGED CONE-HEAD Conocephalus dorsalis (f)
·
The
Short-winged Cone-head Conocephalus
dorsalis is an inhabitant of richly vegetated wet meadows, and therefore
most likely to be encountered close to rivers. The most likely (and now much
more abundant) confusion species in the southern counties of the UK is the Long-winged
Cone-head C. fuscus. Examination of the
shape of the ovipositors will aid the separation of adults but the nymphs are
practically impossible to tell apart in the field and a habitat may be shared by
both species simultaneously. The photographs are of poor quality as the images
have been scanned from transparencies.
