- These Egyptian Grasshoppers Anacridium aegyptium
were photographed in Mediterranean France and in Portugal where this
species is common. As they mature late in the year most of the material
obtained by the photographer has been of immature stages – although these
are more colourful than their cryptically coloured parents and they can be
surprisingly conspicuous. The attractive eye-stripes and the number of
creases in the pronotum are useful identifiers as similar species like
Migratory Locusts may also be found in this area. The insect in the fourth
photograph is just about to shed its skin and the eighth picture shows an
intact skin from another individual following ecdysis. It is probable that
most of these shed skins will be eaten immediately after this process as
they contain useful nutrients.
