These photographs of adult female and male Portuguese or Iberian Mountain Bush Crickets Antaxius
spinibrachius (the identification in this
poorly recorded part of Europe is presumptive as there is a tendency for
locally isolated insect species to become endemics) were taken at altitude near
Olo in Portugal. These insects are not particularly large, but they are very
well armoured, and their cryptic colouration is both beautiful and remarkably
effective. The shapes of the male cerci and the female ovipositor are often
useful identifiers for otherwise similar species of bush crickets so it is
important to try to capture these features in photographs for later comparison
with reference material, particularly if they have been taken in unfamiliar
territory. With thanks to Roy Kleukers for provisionally
confirming their identifications.
