The
handsomely marked Stripe-winged
Grasshopper Stenobothrus lineatus is most readily located by listening for the
distinctive stridulation of the males and recognised both
by its behaviour (watch for the movements of the hind legs) and the
characteristic white pterostigmata. The stridulation
has been likened to the sound of a sewing machine and this stands out against
other grasshopper stridulations for those still young
enough to be able to hear these sound communications clearly. Unfortunately,
older observers may lose the ability to detect high-frequency orthopteran stridulations and therefore it may be necessary to utilise
bat-detectors when performing site surveys.
