After several sporadic sightings in the UK the Large Cone-head Ruspolia
nitidula has recently established a small breeding
population on the South East coast, possibly as a precursor to a broader range expansion
in response to anthropogenic climate change and similar to the behaviour exhibited
by several other Continental European orthopterans. However, the above
photographs were taken in France where this distinctive bush cricket is widely
distributed – note that most of these insects are green but there is also a rarer
brown form. The nymphs illustrated are final instar females, already in
possession of very impressive ovipositors.
