The
robustly built Rough-backed Bush
Cricket Uromenus rugosicollis may be distinguished from other related Saddle-backed Bush Crickets Ephippiger spp. in the
region of France where these insects were located by its white compound eyes.
These insects rely on their excellent camouflage to avoid detection by
predatory birds, often resting on well-armoured, spiny plants. The above
photographs were taken in the Vendée, France. A brown form is shown in two of the
photographs.
