Female European grasshoppers belonging to the genus Calliptamus (italicus and barbarus) are impossible to
separate to species from their appearance alone, meaning that DNA analysis
would be required to unequivocally identify them when conducting site surveys.
However, males can be identified in the field or from clear photographs
provided that the morphology of their genitalia can be seen. The compound eyes
of C. barbarus seem to be proportionately
larger too. It may also be possible to identify females by association if they
have been observed to have been mating with identifiable males. The above
photographs are of a male Barbarian Grasshopper C. barbarus.

This useful French language reference illustrates
the morphological differences between males of Calliptamus barbarus and the closely related Italian Locust or Common Pincer Grasshopper C. italicus: https://cdnfiles1.biolovision.net/www.nature79.org/userfiles/AIDEIDENTIF/citalicusvsbarbarus.jpg.
