·         The ability of cryptically coloured grasshoppers and crickets to blend in with their habitats is quite amazing, and the Red-winged Grasshopper Oedipoda germanica, an inhabitant of dry, rocky terrain in continental Europe, is a species that relies on not being spotted by predators, remaining motionless unless threatened, whereupon the red flash colouration of the hindwings will be used as a confusion tactic as the grasshopper takes off. They will usually land not too far away, rendering themselves invisible once they have landed on a background of a similar colour to themselves. This species is variable in appearance, as will be evident from these photographs. There are several similar species. Some of these have blue hindwings, and others red. The above photographs were obtained in France and Italy.
