Stick Insect-like Cone-headed, Nosed or Slant-faced Grasshoppers Acrida
spp. are remarkably well camouflaged when surrounded by vegetation, but this
subterfuge fails if there is any contrast with their background. In the above
photographs, taken in the South of France, a green Common Cone-headed Grasshopper Acrida ungarica mediterranea, one of several similar members
of this genus, shows up readily, but a brown example of the same species would
be far harder to spot. Evasive action would undoubtably have been taken if a
predator had approached after the photographs had been taken!
