Red-tailed, or
Two-coloured (sic) Mason Bees Osmia bicolor
(black is not a colour) are
fascinating insects to observe. The females construct their nests inside empty
snail shells that they subsequently camouflage with small stems. These are
collected and then flown back to the selected shells so if a twig appears to be
flying there is every likelihood that it will have one of these little bees
propelling it! Their compound eyes merit close examination as they are
beautifully patterned.
