The two facial projections
from which the (current) specific name of the Red Mason Bee Osmia bicornis has
been derived are only clearly visible in the fourth and final photographs of
females. The appearance of this peripatetic and rather common solitary bee can
vary considerably with age and the insect in the final photograph is rather
worn. The antennae of the males are longer than those of the females and the
latter are comparatively robust.
