BROWN-FOOTED LEAF-CUTTER BEE Megachile versicolor

·         The Brown-footed Leaf-cutter Bee Megachile versicolor is one of several similar (and tricky to identify) bees that utilise leaves and/or petals to build their nests. These plant materials will be cut away in rectangular or semi-circular sections that are small enough to be carried by the bees in flight (the shapes are cut according to requirements as they need to be arranged properly) and tell-tale signs of the presence of these insects may be seen on roses or other plants with leaf-damage. The nests are constructed in holes in dead trees, walls or in the soil, and by watching the bees closely they may lead the observer to their nests. These bees are highly mobile and fast-moving subjects, often moving from flower to flower without pausing for long, so persistence may be required when trying to photograph them.
