·         The Ashy Mining Bee Andrena cineraria was formerly known as the Grey Mining Bee. The fortunes of this handsomely marked bee have improved during recent years and it has undergone range-expansion that has probably been linked to anthropogenic global warming and the consequential climate change. This species nests underground, often in well-worn footpaths or other bare ground and although these are solitary bees with individual nests they may occur in substantial aggregations. It feeds on a variety of flowers, is a very active pollinator and it may be encountered in garden habitats. The associated cleptoparasite Lathbury’s Nomad Bee Nomada lathburiana (illustrated elsewhere on this web site) is one of several associated insects likely to be found sharing its habitat, usually with malign intent.
