The
handsomely marked digger wasp Ectemnius
lituratus is one of ten similar members of
this genus found in the UK. It is common in the southern counties where it may
often be seen feeding avidly on umbelliferous plants. The larvae are
provisioned with flies and in the fourth photograph one of these wasps may be
seen hauling a hoverfly substantially larger than itself to a nest hole that
would have been excavated in decaying timber.
