·         The male Box-headed Mason Wasp Gymnomerus laevipes, the solitary representative of this genus in the UK, is similar in appearance to members of the genus Odynerus, particularly O. spinipes. However, G. laevipes lacks the characteristic notches underneath the mid femorae of this species, and there are other minor anatomical differences referred to in entomological identification keys. Females nest in hollow stems and their larvae are supplied with small Hypera spp. weevils. Amazingly, the individual wasp illustrated above was photographed on three separate occasions – it was too windy on the first so the other opportunities were welcomed!
